While the '90s slip dress trend has proved that it's here to stay, our favorite party-goers have transitioned from opaque satin slips to barely-there, sheer slips. As I scrolled through Instagram this morning, I came across a post by Lily-Rose Depp, which featured her latest photoshoot for i-D's The Timeless Issue. Two B&W photos displayed Depp wearing a sheer slip dress with only black underwear underneath—showing a striking resemblance to the iconic "naked dress" that Kate Moss wore to Elite Models' "Look of the Year" party in 1993. She even wore her hair up in a bun and posed with a cigarette to mirror 19 year-old Moss' party ensemble.
Kate made headlines with this look and put sheer slip dresses on the map. What I love about this iconic fashion moment is the story behind it. "I did not know that this dress was see through until the pictures came out the next day in the newspaper. It was the flash that made it look naked," Moss explained in a British Vogue video.
Now, sheer slip dresses are becoming a staple in night-out wardrobe. The sustainable clothing brand, Bella Venice, dropped a new lace collection featuring ultra-feminine prints and fabrics that are "light, sexy, and sheer." Its collection is about embracing ourselves and celebrating our bodies, which I believe is the reason why Kate Moss' sheer slip dress went down in fashion history. Despite finding out about her wardrobe malfunction-turned-fashion statement through the media, Moss embraced the look, and she fondly looks back on the memory.
